Personal History:
Grace Bridges grew up in south Missouri. This is a traditionally poor segment of the state, but her mother was a long-time commercial airline pilot, and thus the family brought home six figures. Her father was a Country Music singer and songwriter - not very well known outside of the state, but fairly popular, and talented. There was no discord caused by the unsteady income. Her mother loved her father, and they worked well together. The family lived well within their means, and even that was far above the average for the area. All things considered, Grace had a great childhood, until her younger sister Audrey was hit by a car walking home from school. The driver was drunk, and was going over 40. Grace was told that her sister died on impact. She didn't feel any pain. It is a quiet comfort she clings to.
In school, Grace was always athletic, and involved. She participated in track, and cross country, as well as playing soccer, where she made all state. She was extremely popular, and well liked by most all of the students. She wasn't your average popular type, however, and was always nice to everyone - even those she didn't constantly hang around with. Her teachers adored her, because of her above average IQ, and her personal need to have homework done to perfection, projects completed with flair, and tests flawless. She studied furiously, and the results were visible. While she was good at sports, and sharp as a tack, she didn't get offered any sports scholarships. It's all just as well, as she probably wouldn't have accepted them. She knew that she wasn't going to be an athlete all her life. She enrolled in the Political Science program at Tulsa, one of the best in the country, and specialized in international relations. This was simply a formality, however - her real goal was the Air Force.
Tulsa didn't have an ROTC program, so she had to make a 2 hour trip to Stillwater every week, but it was worth it. She had already gotten her pilots license years prior, on her Mom's Piper-Cub, and from that moment on, she knew that she had to fly. She wasn't interested in the slow, boring life her Mom so enjoyed, flying people around lazily. She wanted to fly fast, and dangerous.
After graduation, Grace was posted in Alabama, with the Army Helicopter pilots, for training. She was a little disappointed really, as she wanted to be a fighter pilot. Unfortunately, the world was full of people who wanted to be a fighter pilot, and there wasn't room for her at that time. It didn't matter, however. Sure, the training was a little boring on the Iroquois. It was slow, and weak. The pave hawk was a different story.
Grace was stationed in Iraq for 2 years, dodging RPG and small arms fire, flying her HH-60 in and out of hot drop situations, and conducting search and rescue. It was during one of these missions that she encountered a young and wounded Lucas Clark. It should be noted that Grace never had a boyfriend in School, never in college - she'd never been kissed, even. It was to a point where her father somewhat secretly assumed her to be gay. It had to do with shyness, and the fact that she simply didn't have time for boys. Anyways, she never paid any real attention to the soldiers around her. Most of them, she never saw again. Her troop of pilots commonly ferried Special Forces, and you rarely saw one of them twice.
It would be nice to say that Lucas was different - but Grace is woefully ignorant when it comes to the opposite sex. Sure, she was popular in High School. She hung out with guys constantly. Maybe more-so than girls. She knew how to act around them. She was a powerful figure, herself, and was well versed at bossing them around, politely. For whatever reason, she looked at Lucas and melted. Perhaps it was the situation surrounding him that made her see him differently. Not many came back that day. It began dark for Lucas, and only got worse.
The mission Lucas was on was only some 20 miles outside of her forward operating base. A-10's reportedly had cleared out all anti-aircraft. It was extremely tight getting her helo in, dodging rockets, and RPG's from the ground. Lucas and one other soldier were all she found at the LZ. On the way out, a lucky RPG-7 made contact with her tail, and by luck or skill, Grace managed to crash the helicopter without killing everyone. She only suffered a cut on her head, and some bruises from the seat-belt. Her copilot would eventually lose a leg - and the gunner had never been recovered. Lucas and his fellow soldier made it as well.
Somehow they survived the 10 mile hike through the cold night desert, and avoided further attack. That night, helping Lucas carry her copilot on a stretcher, she learned about Lucas's all-too-recent scars. Did he know how she felt about him after that night? Hard to tell - however, the two remained close friends after the incident.
Lucas was pulled into the Stargate Program, and months later, so was Grace. It was the kind of thing that takes your breath away. Learning that you have a secret fleet of spaceships in orbit. Learning that you would soon be transferred up there, to be stationed there. To fight aliens. Grace automatically said yes, even though her goose-flesh was up. She had no idea what role she would be filling in space. She was a trained helicopter pilot. She knew that Helicopters didn't work in space - so they had something else in mind for her.
So the young pilot was transferred temporarily to Washington, DC - and assigned temporary residence on-base at Andrews, awaiting her posting.

Personality:
Grace has the personality of a natural born leader. That is why she is such a great transport pilot. That is why she was such a great forward in soccer. She commands respect. She's a very tiny girl, realistically. She's short, thin, and not really physically strong. This doesn't detract from the fact that she is outspoken, and precise. Perhaps her physical size is the reason she is so capable giving direction. She is confident, reassuring, and proud. She can be arrogant on occasion, but usually avoids the negative personality flaws.
Despite all that, she is borderline useless romantically. She misses innuendo, doesn't understand body language, and absolutely can not relay her own feelings in any measurable way. It is for this reason that Lucas Clark will probably never know how much she cares for him. It is for this reason she will probably always be alone. It's not a depressing loneliness, simply the kind that comes from loving one's job too much.
Off the clock, with her fiends, however - she is the life of the party. Extremely outgoing, ready to go on adventures. She drinks, but not heavily. Something of a memory of what happened to her sister that keeps her from turning to alcohol constantly.
