Gracie had to be one of the most confusing people he had ever met in his life. One minute he thought that she actually wanted something more from him than just their talks and now she was talking about vodka and KFC. She was going to give him whiplash by the time this night was through and he was sure of it. He had never felt this level of attraction towards another person before and he was torn as he wondered just why he felt the way he did. Was it their circumstances and the heat of the moment or was it something more?
He didn’t have very much time to linger on those thoughts because Gracie’s hand left his and it saddened him more than he thought it would. He lifted his hand up, wiggled his fingers, and closed it into a fist as he breathed out softly. It felt odd not holding her hand but he shook it off – she was right, after all – they did have a long way to go and the longer Mike went without medical care the worse he got so Lucas pushed his emotions aside and pushed himself to his feet.
Lucas crouched down beside the stretcher and he checked Mike’s pulse before checking for a pulse. Still slow and steady – he was still alive. Lucas pulled his gloves on one at a time before positioning himself in front of the stretcher. He didn’t like having Gracie behind him – it meant that he couldn’t watch out for her. He didn’t like having her out of his sight so after picking his rifle up and slung it over his shoulder so that it would hang to his side instead of his front.
”I’ll still carry the head, I just want you to lead the way for a bit.” He pulled his compass from one of the pockets on his vest and focused his attention on it for a moment, his frame turning in the direction they needed to go and he motioned with his hand.
”Just keep heading that way. I say we’ve probably got a mile under our belt – only nineteen or so more left.” Lucas put his compass away before he bent down to grab the straps on either side of Mike’s head but instead of facing away from the stretcher this time he faced towards it. This wouldn’t be the best way to proceed but it made him feel a little more comfortable than he had been.
