History
Personal History: From the day Riley Soliel Peterson was born, life wasn't easy. Right at birth, the hardships started as her mother died while giving birth to little girl. Kory Joe didn't have an easy pregnancy with Riley - constantly having admissions in the hospital, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, it wasn't easy for the woman. The body finally gave out while bringing forth new life. Her father named her Riley Soliel because from the start, she was a courageous little girl, and the sunshine of his life. From that moment on, Jason Peterson did everything he could to make sure his daughter had a wonderful life. Since her father was all she had growing up, Jason was literally Riley's best friend. The pair were inseparable. There was nothing her father wouldn't do for her - attached to the hip, complete daddy's girl. Riley never knew it, but had her father wrapped around her finger. It was because he wanted his daughter completely safe that he joined the Army. It was always hard whenever deployed, but the young man would do anything to see his little girl safe.
It wasn't till Riley started really talking well that Jason noticed the slight stutter in his daughter's speech. Whenever she is excited, extremely exhausted, and anytime the girl was fearful or worried, he also took note of way she always said whatever came to mind. She never really seemed to be able to learn how to have a filter, and he wasn't the only one that noticed. Riley's early schooling years weren't easy, due to the endless bullying and teasing because of her minor speech disability. That was the reason her father started her in Martial Arts. He wanted to give Riley an outlet - place to get all the inward anger and rage she had to be feeling out. He also wanted to give her a way to defend herself. The world might view her as weak, meek, and shy, but that was only the outside they saw. He wanted to give her an edge and advantage - that if anyone took it too far, she would be able to come back. This minor speech disability didn't have to define her. Riley took to it like a bee to honey and excelled quickly. Over the years, the female turned to Martial Arts as a form of expression - where words failed, actions took over. At the same time, Riley started in speech therapy as a young age and throughout the academy’s knowing with all the various different situations she would face, it would need to be maintained. Starting with the SGC, the brunette slowly started cutting back realizing there would come a time she can’t rely on it , trusting all that was taught over the years.
It was also in the early years of school, countless teachers noticed how gifted Riley was in remembering anything read or seen, especially when it came to languages. Testing was done on the little girl, and it was found out that she had an eidetic memory. It was a gift and curse wrapped in one. A gift because Riley discovered early on her fascination with languages. More than likely due to the fact speech was never fully a strong point. It was a curse because there countless times, especially when put on the spot, the young woman would either spill out things she wanted to hold back, due to nerves, or wouldn't be able to recall fully anything and be labeled as a fake. You would think that school came easy, but think again. The young woman still had to work hard to get the grades she did. Just because she remembered everything, didn't mean she knew everything - there was a difference, but not one that many people took into consideration.
When Jason saw how his daughter took to languages, he encouraged her to consider a life in the military. He knew how valuable linguists were in the military and knew his daughter would be amazing. Since her father was her hero, Riley gladly took him up on the idea, transferring to Franklin Military Academy in Richmond, Virginia. This was the first time Riley was ever away from her family. The young woman was pushed and stretched, but it grew her for the better. Military school was harder than anything she had ever experienced, but Riley came through with flying colors. While the young woman was in her senior year, Jason was approached by the SGC and joined gladly. It was hard to lie to his daughter about the 'deployments', but it was a secret that had to be kept. Knowing this was the life she wanted, Riley applied for the United Stated Military Academy, was accepted and swore an oath to protect and serve her country at all costs.
It was during the middle of her 4th class year that Jason Peterson died on an off-world mission with the SGC. The female wasn't told any of the truth other than he was killed in action. It was then Riley totally gave her body and soul over to the Army. She wanted to follow in her father's footsteps - be the soldier and protector he was for her. That was also the reason Riley withdrew from people even more. Her best friend was gone, taken from her. People already weren't her strong point, so why even bother now. Riley dove head first into studies, not really having any time for friendships outside of teams. She was a team player, and would do anything for any cadet on her team, but personal friendships outside the team building? Forget it.
Little did Riley know that while her father was in the SGC, he gloated about his little girl and her amazing linguist ability - how he wanted her to someday meet Daniel Jackson and learn from him, knowing she would be in awe of what the brilliant doctor discovered over the years. When Jason died, the SGC kept an eye on the cadet, watching her progress and towards the end of the 3rd class, approached the brunette about the SGC and the Stargate Academy. It was there she learned about the truth of her father's death and his wishes. Riley didn't hesitate to think it over and quickly accepted.
The academy wasn’t easy, but Riley stuck through it, graduating and continuing on in training. While going through Advanced Individual Training, the young woman went through the DLI – Defensive Language Institute becoming fully career ready in the world of Linguistics. Riley would have stopped there, but it wasn’t enough. She continued on take Interrupter Training. Eventually when all the training was completed Riley started on a SGC team, and as nerve wrecking as it was, only fell in love more with the job. Now the Second Lieutenant has been chosen for an opportunity of a lifetime – an expedition to another galaxy. As scary as it might be, Riley is ready for another adventure.

Personality: Riley has always been an interesting girl to get to know. Suffering from stuttering/word vomiting that usually ended up with getting picked on, the young woman learned at an early age how to be alone. She learned to depend only on herself, hiding behind languages and martial arts. Even being in the various acadmeys, the brunette still rarely trusted outside training sessions. When it came to being a team player, she always showed up and stood behind the motto, no man gets left behind, but once the sessions were over, always retreated back behind the wall of defensive. Hiding behind meek, quiet, and the crutch of being the ‘odd stuttering girl’ Riley identified herself as that.
Over time, Riley slowly let that identity fade away. Maybe it was the confidence of coming through the various trainings. Maybe it was realizing the speech problem didn’t have to define her, especially since the older she became, the less of an issue it was. The young woman is still hesitant to trust quickly – still quiet and reserved, making the more observant approach especially in new places. There is still times where the stuttering/word vomiting surfaces, but more and more the lieutenant is learning to see the triggers and practicing the techniques taught over the years. Steadily over time, Riley is becoming more and more comfortable in her own skin, embracing the person she is, which is only making her into an even better and stronger soldier.

Riley stumbled out of the wormhole, trying to steady footing, only to go tumbling down the stone steps. That wasn't the most graceful entrance. West Point trained you for various different situations in life and in the Army - neither of which prepared you for this moment. They didn't have a class on how to gracefully step out of the Stargate, nor did the Stargate Academy for that matter. Catching breath for a moment, the brunette pushed into standing position, letting the legs stable themselves, while the eyes grazed around at the new surroundings. Samantha's comment brought a small smile to Peterson's face. Definitely was saying what everyone was thinking. This was the dream of a lifetime. How many kids grew up wishing to step foot on an alien planet. Now they were apart of the lucky few that got to experience just that. Even more so, they were lucky enough to learn about all of this.
The mind spun at the countless thoughts as Riley dusted of the pants, straightening up while grasping the handles of the backpack. Hearing the last part Samantha's question, the cadet glanced around at the personnel that was with them, already heading north. "Seems like we start following along. Personally, I want to stick with those who know more than I do," she commented gazing over towards Ezra for a moment, giving a small shrug and following into step behind the older personnel.
Heading down the path, Riley couldn't stop taking in the sights. This planet was unlike any other. Okay so yeah it was the first planet, apart from earth, she had seen, but it was beautiful. The colors were vibrant. The air was crisp and clear. Though a shudder ran down the length of the spine thinking of what horrors could be hiding on this peaceful looking planet. A scene from Independence Day ran through the Cadet Second Lieutenant's mind. Why that movie of all movies came to mind, Pyrex didn't know why. Maybe it was because she was walking down on a path in a strange planet.
"Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore." Riley muttered to no one in particular, taking a small deep breath. Hands grasped hard on the straps, knowing they would be slightly shaking other wise. Taking a look over the shoulder, the brunette gazed back at the others, trying to get a sense of exactly how they were handling it all. Back at the Stargate, it seemed everyone was feeling the same she had been - awe struck of where they were, and most likely, all they were about to experience. Who knew what was bound to happen. This was a whole new ball game. Everything West Point had taught the cadet only helped to a certain point now they were here. Oh yeah Toto, they definitely weren't in Kansas anymore. If only Auntie Em could see where they were now.
