Ayden & Alavair's Home
Arlington, Virginia
Ayden's mind was running a mile a minute. After she had returned from her mission the Lieutenant Colonel had rushed home from the briefing to check on her son. The email that she had received before she had left for P3X-901 had left her shaken - something that rarely ever happened. The former pilot had spent the remainder of the evening by Isaac's side and checked then double checked each lock in their home. She couldn't shake the feeling that overwhelmed her and found herself unable to sleep. She made herself comfortable in the nursery, wine glass in hand as she stared at the tablet in her hands, rereading the words in the email.
The hardest.
Death is lighter than a feather.
You were a fool to bring him into this world.
You were a fool to think that he would be safe.
The fact that the best of the best were trying to trace whoever had sent the email and had failed shook Ayden to her very core. She knew that she had enemies, but what kind of person would target a child? An innocent little boy who was barely five months old? It wasn't right in any sense and whoever was behind this must have been caused a lot of harm by the Lieutenant Colonel. Her mind reeled with the enemies that she had made over the years but there wasn't one that came to mind that would want to cause her this much pain. Most enemies were aliens met off-world, none that had access to computers or emails for that matter.
As the sound of the alarm system disengaging reached Ayden's ears she glanced at the tablet sitting on the nightstand - the one from the alarm company - and she could see the cameras that were placed throughout the house. Her hand immediately reached for her handgun before she relaxed, realizing that it was none other than her husband, more than likely returning from his own mission. She relaxed, but only slightly, and closed her eyes as she took in a breath. She knew she couldn't hide this from him - but was now the proper time?
Instead of rising from the rocking chair in the nursery Ayden stayed where she was. She reached for her wine glass again and took a sip as her blue eyes traveled to the crib where their son was sleeping. He hadn't stirred at all and for that she was grateful. She would do anything to protect her little one, even if it meant sacrificing her own life, only she hoped it wouldn't come to that. The anger that flooded through her body was enough to scare anyone and she'd happily put a bullet between the eyes of whoever sent this email.
